Hotel Type

Boutique Hotel

One of the more charming Montreal boutique hotels you'll find occupies a prestigious location in the heart of old-town in a 19th Century building with concrete façade and glass windows that overlook a picture-perfect one room lobby with adjacent gourmet eatery and small bar. A lobby lined in period exposed brick walls and cantilevered ceilings is more country French than urban modern, with crimson color lounge chairs and oversize sofa that feel better than they look. Through the lobby, a step-down bar is located in the atrium of the building with cubist club chairs and red banquette arranged around a built-in wall fountain and jungle of towering houseplants leading to a larger lounge and bar ideal for weekday happy hours or bistro-style dinners. Despite the obvious decorating missteps, it's still one of our favorite Montreal hotels down to the cellar-style French eatery lined in reclaimed wood floors and coveted gourmet menu of organic, homemade specialties.

The Room

Divided between rooms with an exterior or interior view that face the inside courtyard, the first is always the more preferable and more likely to be overbooked. Exposed brick walls extend into private guest spaces with glossy white trim and occasional gas fireplace surrounded by comfy country French furnishings and working business desks clad in a well-kept but not ideal black wood veneer. Entry-level rooms feature built-in tables with small LCD-screen TV and bistro tables with two simple wooden chairs for morning in-room breakfast. Craft artwork and sheer cotton drapes are an obvious weakness, but with working kitchens and city views in larger suites that make-up for the misstep. Bathrooms are large, tranquil spaces of counter-mounted white porcelain sinks and mosaic tile dealing with stall showers and separate soaking tubs.
